Your baby’s speech advantage

Talking Time is designed to help stimulate natural speech & language development and show you effective ways to communicate with your baby.

Talking Time is a DVD made especially for babies and their care-givers. We have created friendly animal puppets with big tongues who show you mouth movements and sounds needed to develop speech.

When communication and interaction are fun, they become infectious.

Talking Time encourages

  • Teaching a child to listen to others

  • Imitating and copying

  • Responding to sounds and movements in play so the child is encouraged to interact

  • Using a playful, non-direct approach to speech & language stimulation

  • Developing strong bonds between babies and parents or care-givers, through activities that are enjoyable and natural to the child and parent

Speech development is critical to later reading and learning abilities

You may not think about speech development every day, but it is so important to your baby’s development. Research has proven a strong link between normal speech development, general learning and reading development.

The trouble is many parents don’t get any information about speech development until they find out there’s a problem.

The good news is, our work has highlighted a great deal about how to stimulate normal speech development in infants. In fact, communication is a natural process that can be furthered by simple repetition and vocal play.

Some of the key reasons for engaging in simple activities to stimulate speech development are

  • Speech skills develop best in an environment that is rich with sounds and words
  • The first three years of life are critical for speech and language development
  • By six months of age, most children can recognize speech sounds in their native language
  • There is a strong link between early speech development and later abilities in reading and learning skills
  • Parents and care-givers play a vital role in speech & language development

You already know that you play a vitally important role in your child’s development. With Talking Time you can have fun while engaging in activities that will help your baby with normal speech & language development.

We have also learned a lot about identifying the risk factors that may result in speech delays and learning difficulties.

These factors include

  • The rise in the survival rate of premature babies who often develop speech problems
  • An increase in twins and multiple birth babies who are “at risk” for speech and language problems
  • A rise in the number of adopted children, especially children from foreign countries
  • An increasingly multicultural society

Talking Time is based on over 60 years of research and experience

Talking Time was created by Dr Joan Kosta and Dr Nancy Polow. Both have extensive clinical and teaching experience in speech-language pathology. They are passionate about helping babies develop normal speech and showing parents useful ways to interact with their babies.

Speech and language has been an important part of our lives for over thirty years. We have worked with thousands of children and adults with speech, language or voice problems.

Through our clinical work and research, we’d like to show you some natural and fun ways you can play with your baby while promoting normal speech and language.

We have found that parents and care-givers are unclear about the ways to encourage speech through play.

This motivated us to create Talking Time. We invite you to use every day opportunities – as seen in Talking Time – particularly imitation and repetition, to stimulate your baby’s speech & language activities by practicing your own natural and daily communication exchanges.

Talking Time began with a pilot DVD. We conducted field testing with 100 mothers and babies. There was some great, enthusiastic feedback and the positive responses encouraged us to produce a final product. We were delighted with comments from parents who said they had not realized how easy and comfortable it is talking to babies.
